Google Earth is fun and surprisingly simple to use.  I really like the ground photo's that are included, as they help to bring things to life.  Tracking distance is easy, though in most practical cases I might just use Google maps where roads are an option.  The quality of the maps in China leave something to be desired (though I am not surprised).
